A UUID whose first 48 bits are a Unix timestamp in milliseconds, followed by random bits. Defined in RFC 9562 (2024), it sorts by creation time.
Random v4 keys scatter inserts across a B-tree index, causing page splits and cache misses. v7 keys arrive in order, so inserts append like an auto-increment while staying globally unique.
It reveals the creation time to the millisecond. If that's sensitive, use v4 for public-facing IDs.
